The Perfect Solo-Travel Camera: Olympus PEN E-PL8 Review

Olympus Pen E-PL8

Last year, I was in the market for a new camera. One that was portable, user friendly, and pretty to look at (I know, not that important, but still). I searched around quite a bit, and discovered a new breed of camera that seemed to fit my needs. These, of course, were mirrorless cameras. A type of DSLR that does all the good photography stuff, but is digitalized and less than half the size of its mirrored counterparts.

After perusing the interwebs and trying to find “the one”, I came upon the Olympus brand. If you haven’t checked out the Olympus cameras, then you definitely should, because they are wonderful and I am totally smitten. I found a camera that was a little more in my price range, making it more suited for a beginner photographer like myself, that I totally fell in love with.

So, what is this perfect camera that is reasonably priced, good quality, pretty, portable, and perfect for those on the go? Read on to find out! (Although I’m sure you already know given the title of this post hehe!).

Drumroll please, as I introduce to you…

The Olympus PEN E-PL8 Mirrorless DSRL!:

First of all, lets talk about looks. The Olympus Pen E-PL8 has a sleek vintage design. This gives it a timeless, classic feel that will never go out of style. It’s extremely light and portable which is perfect for those (like me!), who like to carry their camera around with them in their purse. You never know when a photo opportunity will arise.

I’ve been carrying my camera in my purse, knocking it around, for almost a year, and it’s still in great condition. I’ve also fallen in a stream with it around my neck… And after two days in a bag of rice, it was perfectly fine! I would suggest buying a case for it though (for those of you who are smarter than I am).

Here are some cases I’ve been eyeing…

This camera is know as the “blogger camera” of the Olympus family, and it has many features that reinforce its name. A flip down screen allows you to take selfies with ease, or film vlogs on the go. You can also get the Olympus app and directly transfer your photos to your phone at any time.

The Olympus Pen E-PL8 is also great for bloggers as it has interchangeable lenses, allowing you to capture whatever photography style fits your brand best. I currently have the Olympus 14-42mm f3.5-5.6, the Olympus 45mm F1.8 and Olympus 25mm F1.8 for close up portraits and blogger shots and the Olympus MSC ED-M 75 to 300mm II f4.8-6.7 for zoom shots of wildlife.

Finally, this is the perfect camera for beginners with a passion for photography. Not only does it have a reasonable price tag, but it is extremely user friendly. There are several automatic settings on the camera allowing you to capture the photos you want without the skill of switching to manual.

But don’t worry. For those who want to learn the manual settings, this camera is perfect. It’s large screen shows exactly how your photo will turn out. This means you can play around with the settings and see what happens. If you don’t know what a higher aperture and lower shutter speed will do, try it out on the camera. You will see how the screen will get darker, lighter, etc, in real time… I was having a tough time grasping the manual settings on my camera until I started playing around and looking at the screen. Using this method, I found it was must easier to understand what each setting does.

This camera has really taken my blogging to another level. It allows me to take gorgeous videos and photos that I previously wouldn’t have had access to. All for a decent price and compact design. I honestly carry it around everywhere with me, and I have a feeling you will too… If you want to look into buying the Olympus Pen E-PL8, click here.
