If you’re ever looking to do a relaxed hike on a weekday after work, or are feeling a little hungover and need to cleanse your body of the weekends wrongdoings, I would recommend the Venus Mine hike.
This hike is short and sweet. And, being a reasonable distance from Whitehorse, Yukon, it’s perfect for making use of that midnight summer sun.

Just 10 minutes past Carcross, Yukon, you will see a pull out with a yellow gate on the side of the road opposite the water. This is where you park your car and start this hike. The trail is an old mining road that zigzags its way up the side of the mountain. It only takes about an hour to make it up to the top and is a hike that most people would be able to do with ease.
Of course, we decided to forge our own path for a portion of this hike… Because why would we do what normal people do and stay on the nice wide trail? So we ended up scaling the side of some pretty steep drops, and meandering around for a while finding our way. All I can say is, I would suggest following the path.
Although there are some beautiful views all the way along the hike, the top is definitely the most exciting. It’s not called Venus Mine for nothing. The end of the trails comes to an old mining structure with a portion of the mine shaft still intact. You can walk around the old mine and take some incredible photos of the surrounding area.
You can also bring a few daredevil friends along and see whether they’re brave enough to walk into the mine.
I sure as hell wasn’t.
I made it about 3 feet in before realizing how creepy it was and bolting out. You can feel the air go completely still and cool off as you walk in, and the pitch black in front of you is not a comforting site.
There were a few other people at the mine who were a little more brave than I was. They were climbing up on the old structures and making sure to get the whole experience. Unfortunately, I am a giant wimp (or at least not yet ready to possibly fall to my death off an old mining building). So all I got was the photo above, where I was standing over a decent sized drop (and almost peeing myself).
All in all, I found this was a super fun hike with an awesome reward at the top. We were blessed with gorgeous weather and some beautiful mountain views. Venus Mine is probably in my top 5 favourite hikes because of this, and I’m pretty sure you’ll love it just as much as I did!
