“We should try to do every hike on the Yukon Hiking Website by the end of the year”.
When this was first suggested to me, I agreed right away, not fully thinking of the immense amount of work that this task would require, and the fact that I would actually, you know, have to hike. Although it may be a bit of a stretch to complete the entire list of over 70 trails in a single year, I think a reasonable goal is to complete every hike, no matter how long it takes, and then blog about it (of course). So with this in mind, and 2017 already in full swing, I am attempting to complete every hike on the Yukon Hiking website within the next year (and a bit). Lets cross our fingers for no broken ankles or bear encounters.
Mount White: Hike #1
My first hike of the challenge was also my first attempt at winter hiking! Continue reading to find out more about the Mount White hike, and why running shoes aren’t appropriate footwear for climbing snow capped mountains… Oops!
Mount White is about a 45 minute drive from downtown Whitehorse, right across from Little Atlin lake. It takes approximately 4 hours round trip and as a moderately difficult hike, caters to most fitness levels and age groups. Just make sure to bring water and some snacks (I brought pizza because #foodislife)! This was my first time hiking in months and there are a few sections around midway that were steep to say the least. But after a few stops and some very laboured breathing, I made it to the top of the trail, and was blown away by the views. I mean look at the photos. Unreal!
Mount White is a beautiful mountain and I would highly recommend it to anyone in the Whitehorse area. Just make sure you have hiking boots! I wore my Skechers running shoes and gosh, do I regret it. Soaking wet tootsies and very little traction do not a hiker make (especially someone as clumsy as me)! It was less of a walk down and more of a sliiiddeee for sure. But if you have proper hiking boots, Mount White needs to be on your hiking bucket list!
Want to try this hike someday? Pin this post for later!

February 10, 2017 at 4:46 amIt’s an ambitious goal, but I’m sure you’ll have great fun in completing it. Definitely crossing my fingers crossed for no injuries or bears! I probably would have done the same and worn running shoes to try and hike Mount White – have attempted to do rainforest walks in Nikes, with a similar effect.

February 11, 2017 at 1:40 pmMount White looks breathtaking – I visited the Yukon 10 years ago but it was a short trip & I’ve been dying to return every since. Good to know that it’s in the Whitehorse area & I will bring proper hiking shoes if/when I go, thanks!
